Light & Motion In 1989 Light & Motion founders, Barrett Heywood and Michael Topolovac, started experimenting with underwater lighting systems. These dive enthusiasts were driven to build a company where designers would create innovative world-class products for a variety of sport specific applications. By 1991, the company was shipping underwater video systems worldwide and had expanded into a 16,500 square foot, renovated sardine cannery overlooking the Monterey Bay. This one facility (located on historic Cannery Row) houses the CNC machine, molding, assembly shops, and design offices. After a decade of designing and creating innovative underwater lighting products, Light & Motion returned to dry land. Not far from the rolling wave breaks of Monterey, Light & Motion found opportunity on the single track of the Laguna Seca hills. In 1999, Light & Motion brought their proven experience and pioneering spirit to the world of cycling. The company's products were met with an enthusiastic response and immediately revolutionised the bike light industry. Light & Motion Explained Lumens What is a lumen ? In layman's terms, a lumen is a measure of light - just like inches is a measure of length. Unfortunately, most people are more familiar with wattage. However, watts are a measure of power consumption, not light emission. We rate our lamps by watts and lumens for better clarity. For reference, our 10 HID lamps are approximately 50 lumens per watt. Most of our halogen lamps are 30 lumens per watt. Reflectors Light and Motion peened aluminium reflectors are simply more "reflective" than projector bulbs used by all other bike light manufacturers. Just look at an off the shelf halogen projector bulb, and notice how much light is shining out of the back of the reflector. This is because projector reflectors were not designed for use in bike lights. Our reflectors are designed for one thing: to produce the most light possible where you need it ... in front of your bike. Beam Pattern Most bike lights are manufactured with integrated lamp/reflector combinations that were originally designed for display lights and projector bulbs. For these applications, a reflected beam with very little radiant fill light is best. However, for cycling an a-focal beam pattern with plenty of fill light is best, and here's why. A fairly focused beam pattern is best for punching through the night; however, if all the light is focused, there is too much contrast between the bright light and the blackness of the night. So we designed our reflector to cast a small amount of light that is almost 180 degrees wide to give you the sense of having ambient light and allow your eyes to easily adjust from looking at the light to looking around the trail. Bottom line, you achieve a longer line of sight which translates to faster, safer riding. Batteries Water bottle cages are for water bottles. From the beginning Light & Motion has produced the smallest most powerful battery packs in the lighting business. Now all of our batteries are designed to mount cleanly to your frame or seat post with the included hook and loop strap. Go ahead, bring an extra bottle for that epic ride, we saved you some room. Our batteries are also so light and compact that they will fit neatly in your jersey pocket or hydration pack. Thoughtfully designed batteries and mounts set Light & Motion apart from the competition. Low Weight Nobody wants to carry around any more weight than necessary on a bike. Fortunately Light & Motion have several advantages over their rivals. Most obvious are batteries that use the latest Li-ion / Ni-Mh technology, providing excellent burn times for incredibly low weight. Delve a little deeper and you will discover that the head unit design helps keep the weight to an absolute minimum. One of the major benefits of using a custom reflector is heat management. Throwing the light and heat away from the sensitive electronics and on to the trail ahead negates the need for a large mass of material behind the bulb to dissipate the heat. Less material equals less weight. Not only does the custom reflector push more light forward, it helps save weight too. Durability Light & Motion manufactures products for two of the harshest environments of earth; biking and scuba diving. When Light and Motion first researched bike lights in the mid-90's, they found several weak areas. First, the batteries were being ejected from the water bottle cages, thus the bomber strap was introduced. Second, the bulbs were failing during initial start-up, thus the soft start for our logic systems. If you don't have a logic system, wait 15 minutes after charging the battery to turn the light on. Third, when you mount your light to a helmet or handlebar mount, in a sticky situation it didn't give - it just broke. That's one of the reasons our Dual, Solo, and Cabeza heads rotate in almost every position possible. They simply roll with the punches, and in the one position where they are vulnerable, the break away disk which is included with each system gives before the expensive light body or bracket gives. So now you can go and ride in the dark with confidence.
